Tuna Fishing Costa Rica
Tuna can be found throughout the year in Costa Rica, with higher record numbers in our Green Season from May –October. During these months, you are more likely to catch larger tunas pushing 200+lbs. All other months the common weight of a Yellow fin is from 20 – 100 lbs.
Yellowfin tuna are torpedo-shaped with dark metallic blue backs, yellow sides, and a silver belly with finlets that are bright yellow. Yellowfin can live up to six or seven years. They travel in schools with other tunas and are also known to travel in schools with dolphins.
How do you catch Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna?
When fishing for Yellowfin Tuna in Costa Rica we normally catch them by trolling with brightly coloured lures. We fish for Yellowfin the same way we fish for other gamefish. Yellowfin bite on the same lures and ballyhoo rigs that are used to catch Marlin and Sailfish. The best way to find Yellowfin Tuna is to find the diving birds or schools of spinner dolphin that travel on top of the tuna.
Can I keep my catch?
